The Trap
October 1983. And a crime that shocks Britain. Detectives soon get a prime suspect. But he is already on the run, having escaped police custody. Then they set an ingenious trap, but it's risky.
On October 23rd 1983, The Laitner family celebrated the wedding of their daughter.
They were a hard-working, prosperous family who lived in the beautiful village of Dore, near Sheffield, in South Yorkshire.
Basil Laitner, 59, the son of a Russian immigrant, had built a successful law firm. He was described as ‘quiet and gentle.’ His wife Avril, was more outgoing. She was a child psychologist. And their son, Richard, was in the fourth year of medical school - after having already qualified as a barrister.
The wedding was a big affair - more than 200 guests. After the ceremony at a synagogue in Sheffield, the party returned to their luxury new-build home.

The party was in a wedding marquee. There was a jazz band, champagne and dancing.
At 8pm, the couple left and Basil, Avril and Richard went for supper at a friends. They then returned home.
